Adopt-A-Student

What is Adopt-A-Student?
We're teaching a class this winter for students in the early intervention program at the University of Oregon. One of the assignments is to spend some leisure or daily routine time with a family who has a young child with special needs.

The hope is that students will gain an understanding of some of the day-to-day demands (e.g., meetings, clinics, use of adaptive equipment) that may be above and beyond the day-to day demands of raising children in general. In addition, students may realize how routines such as shopping or mealtimes may be extra challenging for families.

A family must agree to:

  • Adopt a student for a minimum of 4-6 times (approximately 10-12 hours) across the course of Winter Term (January through March 2007). The schedule is agreed upon by the family and student. Any activity (e.g, dinner, shopping, meetings, doctor's appointments) is appropriate.
  • Complete a short survey about resources your family may be interested in learning more about or accessing in your community.
  • Agree to let your adopted student practice their interviewing skills by asking you some questions about your child and your family.
At the end of the term, families will receive a gift certificate to a local department store in appreciation of their time spent sharing their family story and insights with students.
