Improving Mental Health in Infants & Toddlers with Disabilities

The Improving Mental Health in Infants & Toddlers with Disabilities project is a partnership between the University of Oregon, EC CARES, the Lane County EI/ECSE provider, and OCDC's Migrant Head Start to improve mental health services to targeted children and families served in Oregon under part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).

The project includes three years of intervention designed to prevent or ameliorate mental health problems in children and families served under part C. An innovative home visiting program designed to enhance parent child interactions, increase home visitors' knowledge and skills regarding mental health issues, and improve the quality of home visits will be implemented and evaluated.

The project is designed to address the three requirements specified for this Directed Research Project target -- Research on Early Childhood Mental Health. Specifically, the project proposes to:
  1. conduct research examining procedures and content for early identification and intervention for children with mental health problems
  2. focus on children eligible for Part C services
  3. undertake comprehensive dissemination of project findings to OSEP funded RTCs, NIDRR funded RRTCs, and other EI?ECSE personnel nationally and internationally.
